Attention Locals:
This is a reminder for the local psychiatric hospital staff and the university staff and faculty involved. WAY back in 94/95, I told you as you listened in, “covertly’ as I understand it now, that “that which you are observing is altered by the act of observing it”, and also this, “that which you are observing is observing YOU.” I also mentioned Quantum leaps. Keep this in mind as you listen to this podcast above.
"I'm a fish in a goldfish bowl” is a metaphor.  It also means, “I have no privacy at all and I am being watched and judged all the time.” (like in psych hospitals)
So she hides under the bed, hiding from all of those who broke her with the staring and ridicule. Sometimes it is the broken one who 'literalizes' the metaphor and sometimes it is the doctor that does that.

  Carole Hayes Collier

          First Aired 11-1-2011

Why are nearly a third of all elders in nursing homes given anti-psychotic drugs, despite life threatening side effects? Are medications being used as chemical restraints? Can nursing homes be places of dignity -- or should they be abolished? Carole Hayes-Collier was diagnosed schizophrenic at 19 and left to a lifetime of hospitalization. When she recovered, the abuses she witnessed inspired her to join the Gray Panthers and dedicate her life to elder rights and mental health.

Visionary Psychiatrist Daniel Fisher

First Aired 8-1-2011

Can breakdown sometimes be breakthrough?
Neuroscientist Daniel Fisher suffered an extreme emotional state and ended up in a locked psychiatric ward diagnosed with schizophrenia. His crisis of scientific faith fuelled his recovery, and he went on to become a practicing psychiatrist bringing new insights to work with people experiencing psychosis and their families. Today Dr. Fisher is Director of the National Empowerment Center, guided by a vision he had in solitary confinement of mental health system change, including the peer movement and hospital alternatives.

 Madness Radio:
Physics Dreaming and Extreme States
Arnold Mindell

First Aired 3-1-2011 Duration: 53:16

  What is reality?
Why do people in extreme states feel connected to the universe, and experience uncanny and even supernatural events? Does quantum physics have something to teach us about madness? What if therapists were like indigenous tribal shamans, entering into clients' "psychotic" worlds as if stepping into a dream? Arnold Mindell studied with pioneering scientists Richard Feynman and Norbert Weiner and then became a Jungian therapist and founder of Process Oriented Psychology. He discusses his more than 40 years of work with individuals and groups, including people diagnosed with psychosis, and the ancient belief in a purposeful dreaming reality behind everyday events.
